Mcbusted - the album review | Music

Music is actually one of the passions I don't give very much space on this blog - mainly because I think music blogging lends itself more to people with a really niche taste in music and mine is almost as mainstream as it gets - especially these days. But I couldn't let a release as exciting as this one pass me by without giving it a little shout out.

My winter wishlist | Girly gift guide

It's not often I feel that Christmassy excitement but this year I'm going all out - I have a tree and it's up already! I am very rubbish at choosing gifts but I honestly thing nothing beats the feeling of choosing the right thing. Even though it's not all about the presents I love making a wishlists so if you have a girly girl to buy for, if she's anything like me here's what might go down well.

Spotlight on a brand - GHD haircare

GHD, Haircare. final fix hairspray, heat protector spray, style
Now we all know GHD as the only name in hair straighteners and more recently for their Curve stylers everyone is dying to try but I don't hear a lot of hype around their hair products which is a shame.

The Christmas Tag

As it's the last week in November I think I'm in suitable territory to start with the Chrismas posts. I saw this fun tag on Beauty Junkie London's blog and wanted to give it a try so without further adieu I'll get started.

Best and worst dressed from the AMA's 2014

Ariana Grande, performance, black lace gown, american music awards, taylor swift, green two piece, mesh dress

I really love doing these posts - it's one of my favourite things to do after an awards ceremony - diving through the red carpet photos to find my favourites. Today it's the turn of the American Music Awards which took place last night. My usual two best girls didn't walk the carpet this year but I still wanted to show them, because they looked incredible. I love Taylor in green and a two piece and although this is technically a dress it totally worked for me. I also loved that she changed up her usual make up and went for a more sun kissed look. To be honest Ariana without the signature ponytail just kills it, she's so tiny and looks gorgeous in anything - this black gown is just so grown up and sexy

Missguided+ range - my thoughts & best pieces

Missguided, Missguided+, launch, plus size, crushed velvet dress, long sleeved, red, burgundy, partywear

As a size 14-16 I'm just inside the threshold for being able to shop at straight sized stores, except that is for Missguided. I haven't been a particular fan of theirs in the past because I've found their sizes come up ludicrously small and then their ridiculous customer service and returns policy have just put me off completely. It's a shame because I think their clothes are really affordable and my style. As I've spoken about before, if you're plus sized it's extremely hard to get trend led pieces at affordable prices so I was excited that Missguided had not only decided to take notice of this audience, but gave  me the chance to size up if their straight range came up too small (which it always does).

Autumn Boho | Topshop OOTD

autumn, boho, ootd, white, cream, faux fur gilet, waistcoat, khaki, topshop
It's not often I'll go head to toe (make that ankle) in Topshop, I usually find them a bit hit or miss to me given that I am not the target demographic. After years of hearing all about their Leigh jeans I thought I'd take my chance with my Debenhams voucher to pick up a pair along with some other pieces I spotted looking foxy on the mannequin.

Kate Spade for Nails Inc in New York Noir

kate spade, nails inc, new york noir, glossy black nail polish,

Ever since the days of Smash Hits where I used to collect popstar pencil tins I have always loved a magazine freebie. As my mags got more grown up, so did the gifts and this is one of my favourites from recently. Glamour quite often give away some great polishes but often the shades can be pretty hit or miss. But this collection from Kate Spade didn't contain a single dud.

Every day winter makeup look

autumn, winter, makeup, look, beauty, urban decay, naked 2 palette, cheeky sweet shop, benefit, hula, balabamba, rimmel wake me up, boi-ing, concealer, kohl liner, perversion, topshop highlighter, brow box, bourjois rouge edition velvet, nude-ist

Hello lovelies, quick one today just wanted to share with you my go to make-up as the season is starting to change. It's really easy to go over the top with the vampy lips this time of year but I just like to keep it nice and simple with a gold/bronze eye. I'm trying out a new base combo to try and make my face look more alive so have picked up Rimmel's raved about Wake Me Up foundation and Benefit Boi-ing. Highlighters are so hard to photograph but I've been loving this one from Topshop, You might recognise this festive blush palette beauty from Benefit, such a bargain, I'll tell you more about that soon. For this look I used Hula lightly for contour and dusted Balabamba over my cheeks for a flush of colour. I hate that you can't see it too well in the photos because I love that combo in real life.

No.1 Paris Gallery | OOTD drinks and more

Leather panelled leggings - H&M
Black platforms - New Look
Jacket - Miss Selfridge
Hat - H&M
Rings - Topshop
Necklace - New Look

Since I've gone darker I've been feeling pretty rock chick which is where this wintery going out look came from. I was originally going to team this vest - bargain from the RI sale - with my leather look shorts but when I felt the temperature I went for leggings. It's a hard balance to still want a sassy sexy outfit without being 'that' person baring corn beef skin!

Why I'll be staying out of New Look until further notice

oxford street, shops, christmas shopping, busy

I always worry that deeper posts like this are going to alienate some of my followers, but recently I've been starting to feel like I'm really finding my voice and my place when it comes to body confidence. Despite the fact that at my heaviest I only border on plus size , I've always identified strongly with self proclaimed 'fat' women. The prejudices I feel, the struggle to relate to the media, the constant preoccupation with mine and other's opinions on my body I imagine I share with many. We're still in a place where fat is an insult, and connotes being lazy, greedy and slovenly but I did genuinely believe we were going in the right direction.

Dirty Looks Hair Extensions | Review

In addition to the fab Tigi Bedhead products I received from Dirty Looks in their give-away, I also got something I'd wanted forever - a full set of their clip in hair extensions. Now the first thing I would say about Dirty Looks is they really understand the hair extension customer. Other brands I've tried have great products but haven't invested in helping the ordinary person find their way around what can be a very confusing thing. From their blog, their YouTube Channel and even the other products they stock on their site, none of it is filler and will give you the confidence that you have exactly the right product for you, and you will know what to do with it when you get it.

A Sleek Base - Bare Skin foundation and Control Shine Primer

Sleek, drugstore, makeup, foundation, primer, bargain, bare skin foundation, shell, control shine & prime, primer,

I'm a drugstore girl on the whole, but foundations are usually something I don't mind spending a little more on. I would never have picked this up, but I got it in a goody bag from the lovely Bloggers Tea Party a couple of weeks ago. Light matte coverage isn't something that usually appeals to me but I was looking forward to trying something that could just achieve a 'my skin but better' look.

Tigi Bed Head Superficial Smoothing Liquid and Sugar Dust Review

Tigi, Bed Head, Superficial Smoothing Liquid, Sugar Dust, Review, hair, haircare, dirty looks, prize, competition, volume, smooth, shiny

I know I've done quite a few hair posts recently but I've had quite a few things to try thanks to winning a competition from the fantastic Dirty Looks hair extensions. The main reason I'm so into trying hair products is that they're the hardest things to get right, and find any that actually do what they claim. These two TIGI Bed Head products came with my prize I assume because they're things that would typically work well with extensions. One is a texturizing powder for giving volume at the root and the other is a liquid spray for smooth and shinyness.

Estée Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick- Pink Parfait (Shimmer) | Review & Swatches

Estée Lauder, Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick, Pink Parfait, Shimmer, Pink, review, swatches

I mentioned earlier in the month that I got a couple of freebies when I bought these amazing base products from Estee Lauder. I've wanted to try one for a while but the £21 price tag made me a little hesitant. The shade that came in the gift was 'Pink Parfait' which was a shimmer shade which is something I would usually stay away from in a lipstick and for good reason.

THAT Zoella article

zoella, zoe, zoe sugg, teen vogue, the independant, chloe hamilton

I wasn't going to write about this, to give the Zoella article (I am not going to give it the satisfaction of a click through) any more exposure than it deserves seems almost counter productive. However after looking a little closer I realised the Chloe Hamilton of Independent troll column fame was actually someone I went to school with. Someone who I admittedly knew very little but saw a fair amount of in the 10-12 years.

miss selfridge, mint crepe sleeveless midi dress, pastel chequered scarf, primark, silver pastel costume necklace

Can I firstly just say - can you believe this weather is happening this close to November? It's so glorious, sunny and crisp. I picked up this dress in the Miss Selfridge sale this weekend it was an amazing £15 down from £45 which is a brilliant bargain in my book. I can't wait to wear this to work it's so ladylike. Looking at the website it looks like it is supposed to come with a little gold belt but sadly it didn't seem to in store. I'll have to get a similar one myself!

High End VS Low End Cleanser

estee lauder, take it away, makeup removing lotion, nivea, daily essentials, soothing and cleansing mousse, review, swatches, compare, high end, low end, drug store

Skincare is something I've just been dipping my toes into of late, I started with a simple Garnier routine and recently I've just been experimenting with whatever I can find. I know people spend an absolute BOMB on certain skincare products so I was interested to see how something cheaper can measure up. I've been using the Nivea Daily Essentials Soothing Cleansing Mousse for a while now and then recently received a sample of Estee Lauder's 'Take it Away' makeup remover lotion. Now it's worth noting that the lotion doesn't market itself as a cleanser but personally I feel in terms of your routine they both sit in the same place.

Aussie Miracle Dry Shampoo - Aussome Volume - Better than Batiste?

Aussie Miracle Dry Shampoo, Aussome Volume, review

Oh what did we do before dry shampoo? I certainly don't know, I basically live off the stuff now. One of my earliest posts on this blog (complete with terribly edited photo) was an Ode to Batiste's XXL Volume version. Aussie are a brand I've always loved, their beautifully smelling range was just at the top end of what I could afford and it was so worth it. Having recently brought out a dry shampoo I figured I'd better try it.

‘No More Skinny’ campaign according to Dan Wootton at The Sun

Now my lovely readers who are here with beauty of fashion interests at heart, might want to click the back button now. I don’t normally, in fact I have never taken on a particularly controversial topic on this blog because genuinely this is not a manifesto. However I have been intending to speak out on the subject of body image for some time now and after having stumbled across this ridiculous tabloid campaign I felt now was the time to get my two cents in. Dan Wootton if you don’t know is a moderately brown nosing, occasionally condescending, usually avoidable ‘showbiz’ journalist currently working for quality publication The Sun. After seeing this Stella McCartney model photo he “decided enough was enough”, women could no longer be responsible for tackling the problematic representations of their bodies in the media, and he along with some Z-list mates would teach the world what attractive and ‘real’ women are (based on their extensive nutritional and medical training I'm sure).

Estee Lauder Complexion Duo - Double Wear Foundation and BB Highlighter

estee lauder, double wear foundation, review, swatch, shade ivory rose, 2c4,

I'm usually a high street girl through and through, one thing I don't mind parting with my pennies for is a great base. I have had my eyes on  the Estee Lauder Double Wear for a while. Originally it was part of my wishlist for taking advantage of a great staff discount my partner gets to get it but when he didn't get the time to go to the event I took advantage of Debenhams recent 10% off AND freebie to grab it along with their version of the Touche Eclat - the BB highlighter.

Nip+Fab 365 Body Glow Fix

Nip Fab 365 body fix, self tan, review,

As a dedicated fake tan user, it may come as a surprise that I haven't actually talked about a product on here before. I have to say I'm largely guilty of being a slave to Rimmel instant, easy and without the worry of waiting only for it to come out wrong. But, after having got this as a freebie with one of the monthly mags, I thought it was only right that I give it a go.

Tackling Modern Military and Berry A/W Trends with Debenhams

debenhams, modern military, julien macdonald, star, leather look trousers, roll neck, faith cutout boots, rose gold red herring watch, miss selfridge parka, nails in alexa leather,

When I stumbled across a challenge by Debenhams to style looks from their Autumn/Winter collection, I was intrigued. The task was to style a look for yourself and friend from either Modern Military, Pastel Palette, Autumn Luxe, Blue Notes, Pinks & Berries or Winter Green trends. For myself I knew off the bat which I'd choose. Military is a trend I absolutely love - black, a LOT of pockets and a sort of rough around the edges sex appeal. I wanted to keep a sleek simple black silhouette like a fashion ninja so I knew these Julien Macdonald pieces were perfect with a bit of edge in the mesh and the leather look.

I've made no secret of what a high street hoarder I am. You'd probably guess from this blog and a certain recurring handbag and sandal combo that River Island is one of my favourite stores. best backstage fashion style looks new york fashion week september 2014

September aka Fashion Month is a beautiful one. I love spending hours trawling the internet to find streams of the shows, celeb spotting the front row and admiring the painstaking work and showmanship that goes into every collection. After having acted as a dresser for a charity fashion show and it being ridiculously hard work, I can't imagine how much these guys put in to shows of this calibre.

'Barely there' makeup look - perfect for school

barely there, simple, makeup, school, work, i woke up like this,

I remember it well, struggling to hide behind lockers as my head teacher patrolled our school halls with a packet of make up wipes ready to rid us of our badly applied eyeliner and liberally glossed lips. At the time I was devastated and convinced that more was more but now during the day I prefer a more subtle look.

Very heavy on the beauty at the moment because I've recently got lots of exciting things I want to tell you about. Another brand I met at BLFW was Leighton Denny who specialise in nail polishes. I picked up shade Supermodel*, a lovely mink colour similar to Barry M's Mushroom which I love. This one has a slightly more taupe/purple tone which I feel works better with my skin tone and is perfect for Autumn.

MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Laquers | Review & Swatches

MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Laquers, tranquility, aflush, matte, lipstain

Ever since my first swish of Ruby Woo I have been enamoured by a good matte lip. Any product which claims to give you that gloss free finish immediately gets my attention. The MUA Luxe Lip Laquers came on my radar after I'd seen them cited as a good dupe for Lime Crime's iconic Velvetines. Starting with the packaging, the frosted finish imitates LC's but is finished with MUA Luxe branding which personally I like a bit more than standard MUA. They come with a box which I find a bit overpackaged but hey that's just me.

I don't have that many positive associations with lip gloss but whilst perusing the shelves of Walgreens in America, gob smacked at how cheap all the makeup was I came across a lip gloss I hadn't seen before - 'Stay Glossy' by Rimmel. I took it home because it was something ridiculous like $2 and from then I was converted.

Given that having my hair blonde is pretty hard work as it is, I haven't wanted to take the plunge and dye it. Like I wrote about here, originally for old blog, I used one of the Bleach dyes to do my old clip in extensions to fairly decent results, they weren't quite exactly the look I was going for.

Soap and Glory Supercat Liquid Liner - review (good for beginners)

Soap and Glory Supercat liquid liner pen

Ah the gorgeous cat flick, the most difficult of all the beauty looks. Not only do you need a delicate, steady hand but you need the right formula and means of applying. A minefield I have been constantly trying to navigate ever since I started wearing makeup. I have eyeliner on the waterline, or under the eye down but for some reason I just can't seem to get lining the eyelid right. My eyes are very small so even being the slightest bit heavy handed makes me look like a drunk panda.

Staying at the Cottonwood Boutique Hotel Bournemouth

View of Bournemouth seafront, Cottonwood Boutique Hotel Bournemouth

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent this weekend away first in Devon then to extend our weekend I booked a nights stay for Ryan and I in Bournemouth on the way home. I love the idea of boutique hotels because they are so unique, and you really feel like you have had a special, individual experience. I came across the Cottonwood Boutique Hotel when browsing Expedia and paid £69 for one night in a double room. For a hotel on the seafront it was a great price, so I arrived wondering what the catch was but I feel happy to say I couldn't find one.

How to get the best out of Uni (or not)

what to do after a levels. what now, should i go to uni, life help, career advice, education advice,

I wanted to write this post ever since I saw Zoe's 'Is university the right choice for me' post about her experiences there, and with A Level results having come out yesterday I feel like now is a good time to share my thoughts. I'm from the same town as Zoe, and like her I felt so much pressure to take the university route. Even at GCSE level, I felt pressure to go to one of the two colleges available to me because it was such a high standard and I was 'lucky' to have gotten in. I didn't stop to think about which college was actually right for me which immediately set me down the wrong path. Although I got great grades at GCSE, I never really felt like I was properly an academic person,

I felt I could identify more with social and creative learning. So being stuck in a college, completely immersed in a tradition of books, classically 'academic' subjects and ridiculously high grade expectations was completely stressful to me. I started down a road of applying to study media production, but it all got too much for me and I dropped out with 5 months to go to work full time at Gap. My parents were incredibly annoyed, and no one could believe I'd given up with so little to go - ruining my chance at Uni or a career ... Or so I'd thought. It's taken me a long time to get myself pointing in the right direction and I've learnt a lot I wish I'd known back then so I thought I'd share some of that in case it helps any of you.
