Met Gala 2014 - Best and Worst Dressed

Last night was the night of the year every fashion hungry girl would have sold their right arm for an invitation to - the Met Gala. Hosted by Anna Wintour herself, the guest list definitely reads as 'who is who' of the A-list celebrity world. Of course with any exclusive celebrity event comes the good, the bad and the ugly of fashion. I've picked a couple of the best and the worst to show you here.

The best

L-R Blake Lively, Taylor Swift, Leighton Meester, Victoria Beckham

After this post I don't think anyone will be surprised to see Blake Lively and Leighton Meester on this list. Blake accentuates her curves in this custom Gucci rose tinted gown showing just the right amount of skin with a beautiful train left billowing behind her. Ryan is a lucky guy! Leighton is well known for taking inspiration from the roaring 20's and this gold beaded Emilio Pucci number doesn't disappoint. I love sleeved gowns and I think it fits just beautifully around the middle. The embellishments complimented the Charles James theme perfectly.

My girl Taylor was also rocking a rosey nude pink in the form of an Oscar De La Renta gown embellished with silver beading. She goes bold with her signature red lip which I'm not sure I'd have chosen with a pink dress but she works it effortlessly. The neckline works perfectly with her cute curled bob to accentuate her enviable décolletage.

Victoria Beckham is rarely a name I'd put into any inspiration of mine, with her waif thin figure and often conservative choices I don't find her style particularly relevant to me but I have to admit this gown from her own collection is amazing. She looks elegant, timeless and it's interesting without being 'mutton'. The two tier also gives the illusion of curves where there aren't any. I also love that her accessorising is really simple and clean to go with the dress.

The Worst

L-R Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Upton, Lupita Nyong'o, Katie Holmes

This is just living proof that just having the right designer is not enough - whilst Taylor's Oscar De La Renta gown was enchanting, SJP's looks more like what you might have worn to a prom in the 90's. I'm not a fan of women of that age showing full cleavage and those gloves are just criminal. The fabric of the skirt looks so cheap. I would have liked to see her in something more simple and covered up to do justice to the amazing hair and makeup.

After her recent Vogue cover I have been absolutely loving Kate Upton. She is stunning and the poster girl for a new type of model. I'm hoping she was having a off day when she selected this horrendous sheer D&G dress. It does nothing for her shape making her shoulders appear broad and paired with that head gear she looks more like a flamenco dancer that got lost.

Lupita hasn't really got it wrong yet in her short time in the spotlight. She has consistently wowed with her elegant femininity at every awards she has attended. However, this Prada creation kind of fell short for me. The sheer netting and headgear, whilst a beautiful colour is strange and does not embody the grace that her looks usually do for me.

Katie's mustard yellow Marchesa dress is on trend with the bardot style neckline however the execution is poor as it looks ill fitted and frumpy on the petite actress. The colour is really strange but her dark features could have pulled it off if the dress was simpler and fitted better.

The main thing that struck me whilst browsing this years looks was the alarming 90's prom dress trend that seemed so be emerging. There were countless stars with gorgeous figures, hiding them away in frumpy shiny dresses that belong in another decade (Zoey Deschanel was particularly disappointing as I usually love her). I loved the nude gowns, where accessorising was kept to a minumum and the makeup was dewy, fresh and feminine. Kendall Jenner and Suki Waterhouse were also great examples of this.

I hope you enjoyed this post, I would love to hear your thoughts on the best and worst of the gala so please do leave me a comment or tweet me.
